Free 7TH Annual College Prep Series Is Smart Deal in this Economy Series begins April 18, 25, and May 9 ATLANTA—The 7th Annual College Prep Series that features test preparation for the SAT, PSAT and ACT for Atlanta Public Schools’ middle and high school students is a smart deal in these tough economic times in more ways than one for parents and students. SAT, PSAT and ACT test preparation classes and counseling can cost on average $150 per hour, per subject; however, the College Prep Series is a free, three-day opportunity for students to prepare for college entrance examinations, navigate through the college application process, and to receive advice directly from college testing and admissions experts. Atlanta City Councilman Ceasar C. Mitchell teams up with Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions each year to sponsor the free program. Parent George Patterson’s 16-year-old son participated in College Prep last year, and this year, Mr. Patterson plans to have his 13-year-old son join his brother in taking the prep test. “The College Prep was a good experience for my oldest son because it gave him the exposure to the college test, so when he and now his brother take the actual test, it will not be a surprise to them,” Mr. Patterson said. The father of three sons adds that the College Prep is a valuable resource for parents with college-bound children. “It is good that the test preparation and college information are free, but for the parents attending last year, we also developed a network to exchange all kinds of information and resources that benefit our children,” Mr. Patterson said. “That information network has been very valuable.” The parents exchange information on colleges, scholarships, financial aid and more via email. Councilman Mitchell hopes the College Prep Series is seen as a smart deal for parents who might consider having their child skip the crucial prep tests because of costs. “The cost of preparing for and going to college is expensive, and in this challenging economy, it may be impractical for some parents to pay for this kind of preparation. But, the free College Prep Series—which is nearing a decade in existence— is for parents to have their children receive the testing experience and to connect with the participating colleges without straining their budget,” Mitchell said. The College Prep Series will span over three weekends beginning April 18th. This year’s series will also include Kaplan’s Parent seminar on the following topics: SAT vs. ACT, Accepted: Getting Into Your 1st Choice, and Scholarship Academy. Hojeij Foods will provide morning refreshments, and Mrs. Winner’s Chicken & Biscuits will sponsor the Power Lunch session.
